BattleBit Remastered: Redefining Online FPS Boundaries
BattleBit Remastered is a massively multiplayer first-person shooter developed by a team of three independent developers - SgtOkiDoki, Vilaskis, and TheLiquidHorse - and published by SgtOkiDoki, exclusively available on Microsoft Windows through the Steam distribution platform. Set in a fictional conflict between the United States and Russia, BattleBit allows up to 254 players to battle on immense maps. The game draws heavy inspiration from DICE's Battlefield series, featuring gameplay mechanics similar to the early entries in the series, including team-oriented character classes and destructible environments.
Released in early access on June 15, 2023, BattleBit Remastered saw considerable financial and popular success, with over 1.8 million copies sold in the first two weeks following its release. It also received critical acclaim for its team-focused gameplay, low-poly visuals, user-friendly game design, as well as its overall simplicity and uniqueness.
Rich and Intense Gameplay
BattleBit Remastered is a team-based multiplayer first-person shooter. Players are divided into two teams representing the Armed Forces of the United States and Russia, fighting to achieve objectives on vast maps. Servers can accommodate from 64 players (32 vs. 32) to 254 players (127 vs. 127), depending on the matchmaking option chosen in the main menu.
Each player is part of a squad within their team and can choose from six different classes, each with unique equipment to fulfill specific roles: Squad Leader, responsible for commanding the team and placing rally points for teammates to respawn, Assault, a versatile frontline fighter, Medic, in charge of quickly healing and reviving injured teammates, Support, focused on suppressing fire, with the ability to deploy ammo boxes for teammate resupply, Engineer, specialized in military engineering and enemy object destruction, and finally Recon, focused on surveillance, reconnaissance, and quick strikes.
Each class has limited access to certain types of weapons and equipment. The game offers a wide variety of weapons, ranging from rifles, submachine guns, to grenades and mines. All weapons in the game are shared between teams and unlocked based on the player's level. Additionally, they can be customized with attachments such as sights, tactical lights, foregrips, silencers, and magazines, which are unlocked as the player accumulates eliminations.
Diverse Game Modes
BattleBit offers several game modes, varying based on the selected server size. Each mode provides different map types and varying access to vehicles.
Although a total of eighteen game modes are planned, only six have been implemented so far:
- Conquest: A large-scale mode where both teams fight to capture control points and deplete the opposing team's respawn tickets.
- Infantry Conquest: A smaller-scale version of Conquest, focusing on infantry combat without vehicles.
- Domination: A scaled-down version of Conquest with fewer control points, no vehicles, and on a smaller map.
- Flag Capture: A mode where both teams compete to steal the opposing team's flag while protecting their own.
- Frontlines: A mode reminiscent of trench warfare, where both teams advance across the map by capturing pairs of control points at a time.
- Rush: An attack-defend mode where one team must attack and destroy various military communication stations, while the other team must defend them.
Accolades and Acclaim
BattleBit Remastered achieved resounding success among players and critics. It quickly became one of the most popular games on Steam upon its release, with over 1.8 million copies sold in just two weeks. The game's simplicity was widely praised, often drawing comparisons to the early entries in the Battlefield series.
The low-poly visuals and game optimization were also heavily emphasized by critics. The minimum system requirements are so low that it can run on a less powerful computer.
The destructible environment and team-focused gameplay were also highlighted. In-game voice chat is strongly encouraged, promoting coordination among players.
