DayZ Badlands: dogs and lizards arrive on October 15

Avatar Metrakit - 10/02/2026 at 13h28

Only 17 days to go before DayZ Badlands, and Bohemia Interactive keeps revealing Nasdara piece by piece. The dev blog published on Steam on Friday, September 25, 2026 introduces three new animals, one of which will change how you approach military zones. For players as well as for the teams running DayZ servers, it's something to keep in mind before October 15.

Here's what was announced, and above all what we take away from it on the server side.

Guard dogs around military zones

The real novelty is the dogs. Two breeds are planned, the Doberman and the German Shepherd, with several appearance variants. Unlike wolves, which roam the whole map in packs, these dogs are tied to a specific spot: they stand guard and attack anyone who enters their territory.

Bohemia describes them as DayZ's first territorial animal. The studio sums up their place as a new type of animal that fits neither the predator nor the prey category (see the official DayZ dev blog).

Lore-wise, these are traumatized dogs that stayed loyal to their owners after they became infected. And no, you won't be able to tame them: Bohemia has closed the door on four-legged companions, although the studio mentions more elaborate behaviors in the future, with no date.

The desert lizard and the mouflon round out the wildlife

The desert monitor is the game's first reptile. You'll come across it in the Dasht-e Sarman desert and its surroundings. It flees as soon as it spots a player, but it can be hunted for food and a few resources. Bohemia makes it Nasdara's emblem animal, the way the deer, the bear or the wolf were for previous maps.

The mouflon, already glimpsed in the teasers, plays the role of classic prey, suited to the Central Asian mountains and steppes that inspire the map. It brings its own interactions and its own loot.

What it changes for server owners

An animal tied to a zone is a new layer of defense on the most contested loot spots. On a vanilla server, the first runs to Nasdara's military bases are likely to be more costly than in Chernarus. On a modded server, it's also a balancing lever to watch as soon as the update files go public.

Another concrete point: more active AI entities potentially means more server load. We recommend keeping some headroom on your slots and watching your performance during the first week, as with every major release.

That said, nothing forces a community settled on Chernarus or Livonia to migrate. Many teams will probably open a second server dedicated to Nasdara rather than switch their main server over, which keeps loyal players while attracting the curious. It's also a chance to test the new map on a small scale before deciding on a possible wipe.

Finally, update 1.30, which ships alongside the expansion, has been in the experimental phase on Steam since September 16. It brings motorcycles (the Jana moped and an Enduro that reaches around 130 km/h, roughly 80 mph), more than 150 redone inventory icons and new infected attack animations. Every server, with or without Nasdara, will move to 1.30. Mods that touch AI, animals or the inventory will have to follow, so warn your players that some downtime is possible.

And for players?

If you play PvP, the dogs become a tactical factor: a bark or a fight around a barracks gives away a presence. If you prefer cooperation, expect to see a wave of PvE-oriented DayZ servers that rely on this wildlife to make exploration tenser without player-versus-player combat.

As a reminder, the recap published by Bohemia on September 22 confirms that all key features are still planned for October 15: sandstorms, building reconstruction (around 5,000 houses involved according to a July dev blog), motorcycles, radio and underground facilities. The launch is announced on PC and Xbox.

Our take

At Top-Games, we find the territorial dog idea rather clever. DayZ lacked an obstacle that protects a specific place without relying on the infected, and it finally gives the fences around military zones a purpose. It remains to be seen how they behave in game: an overly aggressive dog could quickly become a punishment for freshly spawned players.

Back when Frostline was added to the site in late 2024, many communities opened a Sakhal server on day one. We expect the same thing with Nasdara, and we'll be keeping a close eye on the first Badlands listings.
