To play Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer you need to install the Open77 mod, get alpha access on the project's official Discord, and own the game in build 2.31 with the Phantom Liberty expansion on Windows 10 or 11 in 64-bit. Set aside a quarter of an hour, most of which is waiting for your access to be approved.
Here is the full procedure, step by step, with the mistakes that catch most people out and what to do when something refuses to budge. Once it is all in place, you can jump into the Cyberpunk 2077 servers we list on Top-Games.
What you need before you start
Open77 runs on one precise configuration. Here are the five things to check before you install anything.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 in 64-bit. The launcher refuses to start on any other system.
- A legal copy of Cyberpunk 2077 in build 2.31, with the Phantom Liberty expansion. Note that this is an exact build and not a minimum version: one automatic game update and you are locked out.
- The Microsoft Edge WebView2 runtime. It is already there on Windows 11, and it installs itself on first launch on Windows 10.
- An Open77 account, created on the project website.
- Alpha access enabled on that account. Downloading the launcher is not enough, and that is the most common mistake of all.
Steam, GOG and Epic are all accepted. The only difference is that Epic installs require you to point at the game folder by hand, since there is no registry key to probe.
Step 1: request Open77 alpha access on Discord
Open77 alpha access is granted by joining the official Open77 Discord and running the /alpha apply command, then following the bot's instructions. There is no separate application to file to become a developer or a host.
A single alpha access unlocks all three uses: playing on the listed servers, hosting your own server, and building your own resources in Lua. The project publishes no approval time, so send this request first and install the rest while you wait.
Bear in mind that servers remain free to apply their own admission rules. Alpha access opens the platform to you, not necessarily a whitelisted server.
Step 2: install the Open77 launcher
The Open77 launcher is a single executable named Open77Launcher.exe, around fifty megabytes, with no installer. You download it from the official page, drop it wherever you like, and run it.
Windows will throw up a "Windows protected your PC" warning, because the executable is not signed. That is normal and expected. Click "More info" then "Run anyway". Download only from the project's official website, never from a link someone sent you in a private message.
The launcher keeps its data in %LOCALAPPDATA%\Open77 and in your Cyberpunk 2077 folder. Nothing to unzip by hand, nothing to edit in a configuration file.
Step 3: sign in and let the launcher find the game
Signing in goes through your browser by default: the launcher opens the Open77 authorisation page, you identify yourself as usual, and no password ever passes through the launcher itself. A single use code comes back on 127.0.0.1 and becomes your session. You can also type your email address and password straight into the launcher if you prefer.
Your session is encrypted with the Windows DPAPI inside the file launcher-session-v1.dat, readable only by your user account and only on that machine. If you find yourself signed out from time to time, that is simply sessions expiring: sign back in.
The launcher then hunts for your game in this order: command line argument, environment variable, GOG registry, Steam registry and library folders including on a second drive, then manual selection. It finally computes the SHA-256 hash of bin\x64\Cyberpunk2077.exe and compares it against the official build manifest. An unknown build does not stop the launcher, but it will be rejected the moment you ask to join a server.
Step 4: sort your mods out before you play
Open77 installs four mandatory packages that you cannot switch off: open77-core for the client plugin, open77-webui for the in game interface, RED4ext as the loader and redscript as the script compiler.
Your own mods, on the other hand, are disabled by default, and some are blocked outright when they are incompatible or when they open the door to cheating. The good news is that nothing gets deleted: disabled mods move to %LOCALAPPDATA%\Open77\modstore and come back byte for byte when you re-enable them.
Two behaviours are worth knowing about. The launcher compiles scripts on a working copy before it touches your game, so a failed compilation cancels the operation and names the mod at fault. And applying changes is refused for as long as Cyberpunk 2077 is running, which is by far the most frequent refusal. Close the game, then apply.
If you use Vortex or Mod Organizer 2, let a single manager handle the shared RED4ext and redscript files. Two managers fighting over the same files is a guaranteed breakage.
Step 5: join a Cyberpunk 2077 server
The server browser sits right inside the launcher, and its list is pulled live from the platform master server. You pick a world, you press connect, and the launcher starts Cyberpunk 2077 with your session: you land in the game without going back through a menu.
There are three ways to join a Cyberpunk 2077 server, depending on your situation:
- The browser, to discover the public servers on the list.
- History, which keeps your confirmed connections, most recent first, private and local servers included.
- Direct Connect, which accepts an address in IP:port, hostname:port or [IPv6]:port format. This is the method to use when a friend hands you the address of their server.
There are also links shaped like open77://connect?server=identifier, which drop you straight into a world. They open the launcher if it is closed, and queue the connection if you are not ready yet. Useful for a server that wants a join button on its website or its Discord.
One last reassuring detail: client updates ship as blocks identified by their hash, so a routine update weighs roughly 8 MB instead of pulling down the full 410 MB package again.
The most common errors, and what to do about them
The official documentation lists the usual blockers. Here are the ones you are most likely to hit, with the fix.
- "Windows protected your PC": normal for an unsigned executable. Check where you downloaded it from and click Run anyway.
- The launcher window does not appear: the WebView2 runtime is missing. The log states the exact error.
- Game not found: start the launcher with the --detect-only switch to see what it detects, or point at the folder by hand with --game-dir. Mandatory on Epic.
- Unexpected build warning: your game updated itself. The platform only targets exact builds, so you need to go back to 2.31.
- Mod application refused: read the reason on screen. game_running is the most common one, so close the game.
- No Open77 in the launched game: usually a redscript compilation failed and the original scripts were restored. Look for a mod installed outside the launcher.
- Empty server list: clear your filters, refresh, check your connection. For a local or private server, go through History or Direct Connect instead.
The launcher log lives at %LOCALAPPDATA%\Open77\launcher.log. It is plain text and timestamped, it is the first thing to read before asking for help, and the first thing you will be asked for on Discord.
Frequently asked questions
Is Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer? Not out of the box. The game is single player, and it is the community Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer mod Open77 that adds multiplayer on servers run by players.
Is Open77 free? The mod and the launcher are free. You do have to own Cyberpunk 2077 and Phantom Liberty, and to get alpha access.
Do you need Phantom Liberty to play multiplayer? Yes. The expansion is one of the requirements, exactly like build 2.31.
Can you play Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer on console? No. Open77 is a PC mod, and the launcher only starts on Windows 10 and 11 in 64-bit.
Does it break my single player save? No. The Open77 client touches neither your campaign saves nor the mods you already have installed, and disabled mods are kept and then restored exactly as they were.
Can you roleplay in Cyberpunk 2077? Yes, and it is the most widespread use. A Cyberpunk 2077 RP server works on the same principle as FiveM servers in our directory, with jobs, an economy and rules specific to each server.
Is Open77 stable? No, and the project says so itself: this is an alpha, with bugs, crashes and an API that is still going to change.
Now go and find your server
Once the launcher is set up and your alpha access is approved, the only thing left to find is a community. Our Cyberpunk 2077 ranking is recent, so take a look at our Discord server directory as well to find a squad before you dive in.
